@aaronssongs,
Very interesting and well put article. The implications of the immigration problem are huge. Some solution must be found, and in a bi-partisan way. Let's not talk about who is responsible, who has enabled, who will fix it, and all that. Let's talk about ways to fix it and keep it fixed. It will take years to fix no matter who is in the White House.

@aaronssongs,
Quote:
The current Republican war on illegal immigrants could be as potent a wedge issue as race and crime were in the 1980s. It exploits peoples’ fear that invading waves of Hispanics—you never hear anyone talk about building a fence along the Canadian border, or rounding up Eastern Europeans who’ve slipped in—are overrunning neighborhoods and schools, robbing legitimate workers of jobs and somehow diminishing the American dream.

Probably because 90+% of the illegal immigrants in America are from latin America, and 70+% of those are mexican? Saying that 68% of inmates in correctional facilities are black is not racist, it's just a fact. Not too many finnish illegals are working in orchards, or robbing people. Of course it is the democratic modus operandi to try playing the race card.

Quote:
But there is a larger lesson for Democrats. They must turn the conservatives’ pounding of immigrants back upon them, because it is a rant and a political tactic—not a policy. No Democrat, running for any office, should fail to demand answers to some basic questions:

What, exactly, would conservatives do with the estimated 12 million illegal immigrants who are now here? Would they round them up and deport them all? Who would execute the raids?

Yes, police, ICE, etc. Start fining employers that hire illegals, stop granting them free medical, social security numbers, drivers licenses, etc. Pretty simple really.

Quote:
What would this mass deportation cost? One think-tank estimate, based on deporting 10 million, puts the price as high as $230 billion. How would this expense be met? Does the candidate favor a special, anti-immigrant tax to be paid by law-abiding Americans? (Now that would prompt some intriguing responses.)

Nothing compared to the billions, upon billions Americans would save not paying for all the free services, and damages illegals cause year after year. Once again, really simple.

Quote:
And what of the estimated 3.1 million children of illegal immigrants who have been born in the United States? They are American citizens, entitled to every protection enjoyed by those whose hot rhetoric so excites the airwaves. The options are for these children to leave and live in a country that is not theirs, or break up families so children may remain here. So much for the family values of the family values crowd.

Repeal or amend the 14th Amendment so that anchor babies are not yet another magnet for illegals. Offer IMMEDIATE family ONLY of the US born that are already here citizenship based on citizenship laws. Once again, all too simple.

@xj0hnx,
That article is ridiculous, the Willie Horton story in '88 was meant to attack Dukakis' lack of strength on law and order, not to evoke fear of black people.

The illegal immigration issue is a problem because of the NUMBERS. Watch the video, you'll understand.

The Willie Horton story was one of the first of many Republican "dirty tricks"...and how do you know what the intent was? Are you privy to information that we are not? The ad showed a mugshot of a black, disheveled man...looking quite scary...which was the intent...that is widely accepted.
Your viewpoint underscores the perception that you, indeed, are "racist".

And it's so hard to take you seriously , on any topic...that watching a video, surely depicting your "skewed view", is hardly worth the effort.

You're right, the intent was to scare people into voting against Dukakis because of his lax attitude towards criminal justice. Horton was scary looking, and served as an example of a Dukakis error, the fact that he was black is statistically significant; odds are an escaped violent offender is going to be black given the population of violent offenders in the country. Ask yourself, what possible benefit would Bush have enjoyed by turning America against black people?

You should watch the video. It explains, using ONLY numbers, the immigration issue. It stars Roy Beck of Numbers USA, and yes the conclusion is to cut back on immigration. Your refusal to watch the video is disappointing, since I'd really like to discuss it with you.

Proof positive that you racist...The criminal justice system is nothing more than "institutionalized slavery"...and why wouldn't the population of said institutions be "predominantly black", when "whites" who are "in control" have set it up that way...I didn't fall off the vegetable truck....not all black people are illiterate, or strangers to higher institutions of learning.
Racism is systemic. And your comments and opinion are just symptomatic of the "underlying problem".

I Don't Like Black People. I Don't Like White People.
Join The Fight Against Racism And Oppression

What you've wanted to know but didn't dare ask

Why do white people...

Think America is theirs?

Hate blacks?

Think they're right about everything?

Think other people are plotting against them?

Like bland food?

Copy everything blacks do?

Pick fights they can't win?

Have so many infertility problems?

Believe everything?

Value yellow hair?

Like "whiter than white!"?

Spray the air?

Make up fairy tales?

Think the world is coming to an end?

Why are white people...

Ballooning up?

Afraid of their kids?

Always trying to get somebody arrested?

Mentally slower than most?

Clumsy?

Easily diverted?

Worried about mass destruction?

Why do white men..

Put cameras all over?

Want to supersize things?

Never have a workable plan?

Wear sheets?

Build underground hideouts?

Poke around in "outer space"?

Cry "Why do they hate us!"?

Hog all the money?

Invent lots of weapons?

Build so many prisons?

Why don't white people..

Relax more?

Go somewhere far away?

Why can't white people..

Admit anything?

Stop pushing in where they're not wanted?

Cut the crap?

Ask yourself, what possible benefit would Bush have enjoyed by turning America against black people?

Please. It's already happening....What do you think the lack of response to Katrina was all about? How do you suppose black voters got disenfranchised in Florida and Ohio, both critical to his election and re-election>?
What? We supposed to be Willie Foo Foos's? Or something?
Who are you? What is your background and your interest in all this...are you some Bush operative, or you with some right wing think tank, promoting rightwing propaganda? Who tf are you?

You should watch the video. It explains, using ONLY numbers, the immigration issue. It stars Roy Beck of Numbers USA, and yes the conclusion is to cut back on immigration. Your refusal to watch the video is disappointing, since I'd really like to discuss it with you.

@Freeman15,
Oh, and the Willie Horton ad was aired by Bush Sr's campaign, not our current president, I have trouble keeping them straight too sometimes, no big deal.

My question was what would Bush Sr. stand to gain from turning his constituency against blacks?

I don't work for anybody, I'm a libertarian and I seek to contribute to the world as such. I believe in absolute economic and personal liberty to the point where the free exercise thereof infringes on the economic and personal liberty of another human being. I desire a world in which people are allowed to rise and fall based on their own merits and are treated not as members of a race or clique, but as individuals.

That said, the American people have voluntarily joined their states under the Constitution, and have set their laws and borders according to their own tastes and preferences. The United States is the property of the American people, and so they have a right to deny the use of its land and laws to non-American residents. Bulgarians, Mexicans, Chinese, or Martians, it doesn't matter, if you're not an American, you don't own this country, and so entry without permission and use of its infrastructure constitute trespassing and theft respectively.

I welcome immigrants, they bring a lot to the table as far as new ideas and generally strive to succeed here because they worked so hard to finally arrive. That said, if you'd watch the video, you'd see that America cannot maintain our current unhealthy numbers of immigrants if we are to sustain our standard of living, which is ultimately why immigrants come here. If we are dragged down into poverty because of overpopulation, then NOBODY has the chance to prosper in America. I'd rather SOME, legal immigrants contribute to our society and enjoy the benefits of our standard of living than let everybody in without consequence and see our country turned into the third world.

Are there segments of the anti-illegal crowd that are simply anti-brown? Yep, just like I imagine there are segments of the "legalize it" crowd that only care about the cause so that they can get baked. The majority of the anti-illegal crowd however recognize the burden these people put on our country and the unadulterated arrogance of the illegal immigrant to simply "walk across" when thousands, maybe millions of people from countries too far away for them to simply "walk across" are waiting patiently for their chance to improve their lives.

Look at the immigrants we had in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries (ie, when most American families came here):

They usually came from Europe or Asia by ship with everything they had, came in much smaller numbers than we see today, and came here largely legally. Then, once they were here, there was no wiring money back home like the Mexicans do, they started their new lives as AMERICANS. They learned our language while retaining their own (which is ok, so long as you learn our's), reinvested in their communities (because they couldn't send the money away......not easily anyway), and generally were some of the most disciplined and hard-working people this country has seen. Legal immigrants show us exactly how grateful we should be for our blessings whereas illegal immigrants show us the exploitation of our resources that we should reject as a culture.

Wow...Bush Sr= Willie Horton.....Bush Jr.= Katrina+Florida+Ohio+No child left behind (except millions of children are being left behind)+ Not addressing the NAACP + Speaking at Bob Jones University + a bunch of stuff that eludes me presently.
One could assume bias and racism run in the family...after all Barbara Bush, comes from "old money", known to be elitist and racist...
A better question would be when has the Republican party been open to the issues of black people, in general???? Uh, ...never?

Whites commit as much crime as blacks...but the justice system is more favorable( read: they have money, and therefore better legal representation leading to less convictions..

I suggest that violent crime among blacks is directly and indirectly related to racism by "whites"....blacks are not more violent than whites...what an absolutely "racist" thought!
Your assertions and implications are exceeding offensive to me...have you no decency whatsoever? The answer is obvious.

Millions of children are being left behind by the parents, not Dubya. It isn't his job, or mine, or any other taxpayers to make sure parents take care of their children.

So, exactly what issues do demonrats address that republicans do not concerning black voters?

Abraham Lincol and Andrew Johnson were both Republicans.....

You didn't answer my question though. What would Bush Sr. gain from turning public opinion against blacks? You contend that the Willie Horton case's use was racially-motivated....how? It definitely hurt Dukakis because he was seen as weak on crime, but how was it racist? Is the use of any black man in depicting crime racist?

Probably, at least according to some. That's probably why Ghouliani held his tough on crime press conferences hauling white guys off wall street, liberal demonrat that he is, was probably scared to offend black voters.

Did you read that source? It helped MY case. It clearly demonstrated that blacks are most frequently encarcerated in black-run DC. Further, it demonstrated quite clearly that blacks commit more crime in general.'

The statistics show that blacks commit more crime, but you've got an unsubstantiated, and in the case of DC, PROVEN WRONG theory that whites load the justice system against blacks.

The fact that Willie Horton was black is simple statistical probability, he wasn't chosen for his skin color.

Wow...big stretch to read that the majority distorts reality and the truth, so that they wind up looking like the "good guys"...please...you forgot who you're talking to....you can say whatever...you can even find documentation to support your argument...what? you 'd have us believe it's from an objective source, and not one "tainted"....now, that's one that "really" belongs in the "humor section". LOL
No reason to get "all emotional"....take your little marbles, and go home...no one wants to play with you...

Put on your glasses.....
He doesn't post anything of substance...it's all propaganda, and his opinion...and you know what they say about that.
I don't puke....that is such a "white" term....black people don't puke...we "throw up"...get that straight.. news flash...you know there's no more slavery...we don't have to endure you any longer, ok? So, speak the Queen's English, and leave all the colloquialisms and slang behind.
Ifn' you can't communicate by using standard English, and correct spelling, how, then, can you be "properly" understood? I rest my case. You can't. A remedial course might recommended.
